Henry Jess

Learner, Developer, and Explorer.

I’m a web developer in Victoria, BC. I build online shops, apps and portfolio sites, and I learn something new with every one. Come take a look at what I’ve made.

Hi, I’m Henry.

I make websites and web apps for small businesses, friends and my own big ideas. I love the whole journey: figuring out what a site needs to do, designing how it feels, building it, and watching real people use it.

So far that’s meant a 3D printing shop with instant quotes, a classroom inquiry app and an equestrian photographer’s booking site. I use modern tools, including AI like Claude Code, to build faster and ship more, but the ideas, design and care are mine.

Website Developments

Real sites, live right now. Each card wears that site’s own fonts and colours, like a little window onto the real thing.

Field notes

Stories from my projects: how they came together, what I learned, and the tools I used along the way. Newest on top; dig down for older posts.

  1. How I built this site with Claude Code

A walk from the canopy to the core. How one long prompt, a few rounds of feedback and Claude Code turned into the site you're reading.

How I work

Solid foundations under everything I build. Here’s what working with me looks like.

  1. Listen

We talk about what you need, who it’s for, and how it should feel. I write it down before anything gets built.

  2. Design

I sketch the pages and pick the fonts and colours, then show you something real to react to early.

  3. Build

Small, working steps you can click through as we go. Modern tools, including AI, help me move quickly.

  4. Launch and look after

I test on real phones, check accessibility and speed, put it live, and stick around for changes.

Tools I reach for

This site, too. I designed it and built it with Claude Code, from the forest to the core.Read how.

Let’s build something together.

I’m taking on freelance projects. Tell me what you want to make; I’ll tell you honestly how I’d build it, how long it would take and what it would cost.
